More Information

Information

  • Bulletproof coffee has added MCT oil (from one teaspoon to two tablespoons depending on personal tolerance). MCT oil is derived from coconut oil but has a higher concentration and better-balanced Medium-Chain Triglycerides. MCTs have the quality of being directly used by the body as fuel in the form of ketones. The claimed benefits of MCT oil are: no insulin release; no glucose rise in blood stream; immediate energy release and feeling of alertness; higher metabolism; less sensation of hunger.
  • FatWater has 20 calories per 16 ounce bottle, and contains natural flavors, xylitol (a natural alternative sweetener derived from trees), and MCT droplets. The drink is uniquely refreshing and satisfying. Drink in place of sugared drinks or artificially-sweetened soda.
  • “Quest” is a brand of nutrition bar. For about 200 calories, it provides about 20 grams of protein (equal to half of a sedentary adult’s daily requirement), 10 to 15 grams of fiber (40% to 60% of daily requirement, more than most adults get from their usual diet), and only about 10 net grams of carbohydrate. (In a keto diet, the daily limit for carb intake is about 20 net grams.) The taste is somewhat bland, but it is chewy and mouth-satisfying. Flavors vary; some flavors are blueberry, apple pie, and brownie.
  • Ketosis strips are strips of treated paper that react to the presence of ketones in your urine. Hold the end of the strip in your urine stream and compare the color with the samples on the box. An average non-athletic body enters into ketosis (starts burning body fat by turning it into ketones) after about 48 hours of very low carb intake, about 20 net grams daily (vs. typical adult intake of 300 grams of carbs). The entire point of keto diets and lowering carb intake is to induce ketosis to start burning stored body fat. The test strips give you reassurance that you are achieving an appropriate state of ketosis. Test upon waking, and at random. Take home the extra strips.
  • Traditional natural sweeteners are cane sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, and fructose in fruits. Artificial sweeteners are “invented” chemicals such as aspartame (NutraSweet) and sucralose (Splenda). All of these contribute to diabetes, overweight, and elevated triglycerides. Plantation Bay’s Carb-free and Low-Carb desserts are made with natural sugar substitutes such as stevia, monk fruit, erythritol, and xylitol. These contain much fewer effective carbs than sugar, and unlike artificial sweeteners they are close to natural (there is some processing to extract them from the sources, which are plants and trees). Stevia by itself, though sweet, is unsatisfying as a sugar substitute because the aftertaste differs markedly from normal sugar. However, when combined with monk fruit and sugar alcohols erythritol and xylitol, a “sweetness pattern” similar to cane sugar can be achieved. (By the way, they are neither sugar nor alcohol for digestive purposes.) Their only drawback is that excessive intake can lead to digestive upset and flatulence.Sauna
  • Actual alcohol consumption is permitted in the Diet in very modest quantities – a glass of wine or a straight spirit like Scotch with no mixers. Cocktails like margaritas, coladas, and mojitos, even gin and tonic, are not advised while on our Gourmet Diet. Beer, in case you were wondering, has about 10-15 grams of carbs and 100-150 calories. Wine has 1-3 grams of carbs and about 140 calories. Straight alcohol (including the alcohol in wine and beer) has no carbs; however, your body will burn it first before burning carbs that you ate. Still, alcohol in moderation is better than carbs because it doesn’t halt the process of ketosis – if you were in ketosis before drinking a shot of Scotch, you will return to a ketonic state once the Scotch has been burned (e.g., by walking briskly for half an hour).
  • “Net” grams of carbohydrate means the amount of carbs that are digestible, mainly starches and sugars. Non-digestible carbs are what we call fiber, and don’t count. since they don’t enter the bloodstream or affect ketosis. For most people who are not active athletes, 20 grams is the recommended maximum daily intake of net carbs to remain in ketosis, vs. 300 grams traditionally thought to be part of a “normal and healthy” diet.
  • Fiber Gourmet pasta has a very high fiber content, about 70% of your daily requirement in one serving, and relatively low net carbs (about 24 grams, half of normal pasta), without any sacrifice in taste or texture. Zeroodle Soybean Pasta noodles are made from organic soybeans without eggs or wheat. One serving provides about 5 net grams of carbs, half an adult daily fiber requirement and 20 grams of protein (1/3 the adult daily requirement), making them a good dieting food; however, the mouth feel is different from normal pasta. Extruded potato pasta is pure potato; you may be surprised to learn that a serving is only about 10 net grams of carbs, and the taste/feel are similar to normal pasta.
